A determination of the outflow speeds in the lower solar wind

چکیده
The acceleration of the low-latitude solar wind, which comes from regions of the corona above large, closed magnetic loops, is a theoretical challenge. Until recently we have lacked direct measurements close to the Sun with which to constrain the theory. When a series of high-resolution coronagraph images is viewed in the form of a movie the continuous outflow of matter from the Sun is very obvious. We report here the results of a correlation analysis of the LASCO coronagraph images from the SOHO spacecraft which we have used to estimate the low-latitude solar wind speed from 3–27 R . Acceleration occurs to the outer parts of this radial range, by which time the solar wind has approached its measured speed at 1AU, implying little acceleration beyond ∼30 R . A very significant result is the detection of a component flowing out at speeds up to ∼1500 km s−1, which is energetically very important and possibly dominant.

Economic assessment of renewable power generation based on wind speed and solar radiation in urban regions
Economic evaluation of 12 MW grid-connected wind farms and PV power plants in two regions in Northern Cyprus for electricity generation was investigated. The wind speed, sunshine duration, and solar global radiation characteristics were analyzed using monthly data collected over 17 years (2000-2016) for Girne and nine years (2008-2016) for Lefkoşa, which were measured at various heights. The re...

Abstract. Wind as a resource of renewable energy has obtained an important share of the energy market already. Therefore simulation and prediction of wind speeds is essential for both, for engineers and energy traders. In this paper we analyze the surface wind speed data from three prototypic locations: coastal region (Rotterdam), undulating forest landscape few 100 m above sea level(Kassel), ...
متن کاملDetermination of significant sources generating low-frequency noise in horizontal axis wind turbines
Several studies show that the Low-Frequency Noise (LFN) of wind turbines could have harmful effects on human health even when it is infrasound. In traditional classifications, the LFN of upwind turbines is referred only to steady thickness and steady loading sources, and the effect of vortices is considered negligible. In this study, the LFN of a horizontal axis wind turbine is simulated in win...
متن کاملOn the source regions of the fast solar wind in polar coronal holes
Fast streams of the solar wind with speeds of up to ≈ 800 km s−1 at a distance of 1 AU (astronomical unit) from the Sun are known to originate in solar coronal holes. With the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) detailed studies of the solar wind source regions have been made possible for the first time. We show images of solar polar coronal holes in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV), which w...

We analyze and compare the ionic charge composition data for different types of the solar wind (slow wind from equatorial regions, fast wind from low-latitude coronal hole and fast wind from both south and north polar coronal hole) which the Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometer (SWICS) on Ulysses observed during the pole-to-pole pass of its primary mission. The implications on the electron t...
